In the USA it has been estimated that up to 20 percent of the population suffers from Dry Eye Syndrome.

Symptoms include:

  • a scratchy feeling in your eyes including a stinging or burning sensation
  • a feeling of ‘something’ in your eyes
  • a heightened sensitivity to light
  • redness or itching
  • blurred vision
  • eye irritation while reading
  • stringy mucus in or around your eyes
  • wearing contact lenses becomes difficult
  • Valued customer K Sage from Minneapolis ‘I get enormous relief from dry eye - beyond what any other drops came close to providing’.

Dry Eye symptoms often increase during seasonal changes when use of artificial heating and cooling systems indoors reduce precipitation levels. Extreme cold, heat and wind can eliminate moisture from eyes, leaving them dry and irritated. This is also true with recycled air in airplanes, offices and gyms.

The importance of tearsDry eye syndrome tests

Tears are a combination of water for moisture, fatty oils for lubrication, mucus to coat the eye surface, and antibodies and specific proteins for infection resistance. They are secreted by tear glands, creating a stable tear film which allows your eyes to maintain clear, comfortable vision. Blinking creates a healthy flow of tears keeping your eyes moist and healthy. But when tears do not provide enough lubrication, you might experience Dry Eye Syndrome (DES). In fact, tears running down your cheeks can be a symptom of DES. In certain circumstances your eyes send a distress signal for emergency lubrication and the body’s reaction is to send a flow of tears. However, these emergency tears are mostly water and will not provide the protection and lubrication your eyes need.

    The causes of DES

Dry eyes are a very common problem caused by many things. For some people it is an imbalance in the composition of their tears for others it is the inability to produce enough lubricating tears. Additional causes of dry eyes include:

  • Aging - tear production usually diminishes with age and commonly affect those who are 40 years of age or older.
  • Menopause - it is especially common in women after menopause.
  • Medications - including antihistamines, sleeping pills, diuretics and birth control pills.
  • Diseases – some diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and collagen vascular diseases affect tear production.
  • Environmental conditions – especially dry air created by air conditioning.
  • It is rare that Dry Eye Syndrome will cause any permanent damage but left untreated it can cause eye inflammation, infection and corneal scarring. It is advised that medical advice is sought should you experience symptoms for a prolonged period of time. But, it is very important to note that Dry Eye is a big red flag for the declining health of the eye. It is therefore very important to reduce stress to the eye in these cases to prevent the onset of other degenerative conditions. Nutritionally supporting the eye along with keeping the eye well lubricated is critical and Can-C does both.

The aviation profession suffers greatest from Dry Eye, predominately affecting pilots (especially those flying commercial aircraft) but also the cabin crew working many hours in recycled air. Regarding pilots, Can-C eye drops offer not only fantastic lubricating qualities but they protect the eyes against potential eye health problems by ridding the eyes of toxins thus giving the eyes the best environment to stay young and healthy. As vision is imperative to pilots, it is worth noting that Can-C eye drops can push away the signs of Presbyopia and assist with glare sensitivity and depth of color.

    How DES is usually treated.

While there is no cure for DES, treatments are available.

Tear conservation – this is the procedure which plugs the ducts that drain tears to conserve your natural tears. Your doctor partially or completely closes the tear ducts in your lower eyelids with silicone plugs.

Surgery – your ophthalmologist can permanently close the ducts that drain the tears to keep more tears in your eyes. For those whose DES is aggravated by an eyelid abnormality or an incomplete blink, plastic surgery might be advised.

Artificial tears and ointments - in less severe cases of dry eyes, artificial tears or lubricating ointments are the usual preferred treatment.

Can-C eye drops.- A simple eye drop that with its unique solution is the most effective dry eye solution on the market. It also prevents cataracts!

    Prevention of DES:

  • Wear glasses or goggles whenever possible especially on windy days or when swimming.
  • Keep your home humidity between 30 and 50 percent.
  • Avoid rubbing your eyes.
  • Use lubricating eye drops before engaging in activities that could irritate your eyes.
  • Try to blink more often especially when performing tasks that require visual concentration.
  • Avoid direct air from hair dryers, car heaters and air conditioners.
  • Approximately 40-50 million people in the US are currently suffering from Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) and this figure is set to increase because it affects those over 40. Can-C eye drops restore the eye’s natural balance to its former healthy and more resistant state improving the environment in the eye working as an antioxidant for the eye. Keeping good eye health could prevent certain eye conditions.

For those suffering with Dry Eye it is usual for very frequent eye drop administration. As there is no risk in overusing Can-C, it is possible to use as frequently as required but it is felt that at the 4 drop daily dosage should facilitate a healing response in the tear ducts themselves and when they begin performing better, the dry eye condition is improved. Also, as Can-C is a natural anti-inflammatory for the eye, it encourages the healing response thus addressing the symptoms of dry eye.

Many of our customers suffering from Dry Eye choose to use Can-C at the 4 drop dosage and then use their usual eye lubricant in between the Can-C applications to reduce costs.
